Kushina Uzumaki is a ninja of the former Land of the Whirlpool. She had a son, Naruto Uzumaki, with the Hokage of the time, Minato Namikaze. She is noted to have had a brash, tomboyish demeanor, long red hair, violet eyes, and as time passed, blossomed into a very beautiful woman. Despite Naruto's close resemblance to his father, much of his personality and choice of ninjutsu are said to be similar to that of his mother's.

She is presumed to be dead, as she is described in past tense. Her face is shown in a couple slides as she is talking with Jiraiya and Minato Namikaze. In this part of the manga Jiraiya is lying on the ground while having flashbacks. In his flashbacks he is with Minato and Kushina as they are naming their unborn child "Naruto".
