Her parents died and left a magical stone (a volucite crystal) which she could never lend or show anyone. Chased by the pirates, she fell from the airship she was in and was saved by the floating powers of the stone and a boy named Pazu. She must escape from the pirates and find the land in the sky, Laputa.
